FireWise participant runs his fourth Comrades
Shumani Joe Dugishi, a FireWise participant from Tshilimba Village in Venda, Limpopo, represented his community at the Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 29 May. He was awarded a bronze medal after completing his race in 08 hours 34 minutes and 30 seconds.
In 2010 Shumani sustained a knee injury that affected his athletic abilities, but he did not allow this obstacle to dampen his spirits. He pressed on and has now completed his fourth Comrades Marathon. During his latest race, Shumani’s goal was to test his capability after his knee injury and, in so doing, show people that anything is possible – even after a few challenges.
“I am very proud to have achieved my third bronze medal, especially since I am not part of a team and do not have a coach or sponsors,” said Shumani. He had decided to dedicate his latest feat to his FireWise community in Limpopo. Kishugu Public Benefit Organisation showed their support by sponsoring Shumani’s registration fee and race gear – a running vest, shorts and a new pair of running shoes.
“I enjoy being part of the FireWise community because it keeps me busy, physically fit and healthy.”
Shumani is the chairman of the Mutale Development Athletic Club and aspires to be an athletic coach and share his passion with children from his community.
The FireWise programme is aimed at protecting people, property and the environment from destructive wildfires by involving the local community.
“We are very proud of Shumani for his dedication and the inspiration he is to his community. We would like to congratulate him on completing this race in such a good time. It is an honour to have contributed towards his race,” said Guy Deacon, General Manager: Kishugu PBO.
